NDPThis year I am torn more than ever regarding the National Day of Prayer.  I know it is a huge nationwide event that brings out people and congregations in droves to events all over the nation.  I strongly encourage people and congregations to gather publically and pray for their friends, their families, their communities, and our nation and its leaders.  However, isn’t that what the body of Christ is supposed to do anyway?  And do it daily?

I am torn because some view the National Day of Prayer as the only day to engage in prayer.  Prayer is one of the most valuable assets that the body of Christ has today.  If that is true then shouldn’t the body of Christ be gathering together, even across denominational lines, to pray for people, communities, and our nation…regularly?

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for praying together and in public.  I  am just all for it more than just one day a year.  Why aren’t there monthly or quarterly prayer events going on across our nation on a regular basis?  Why is it usually when tragedy strikes that we see a call to prayer?  Why does it have to take a Tsunami, an earthquake, or a questionable action by a civil servant, or a city in mourning to bring the body of Christ together to pray?  I am not trying to be cynical, but perhaps if we held more prayer events than protests or more prayer events other than to pray against a politician all of our cities and our nation would be in better place.

As I write this, yes, I am trying and have tried to coordinate cross-denominational prayer events for the National Day of Prayer (for those who are wondering if I practice what I preach, lol).  And yes, I am aware that multiple congregations are already engaged in doing regular prayer events with their congregations and with other congregations across denominational lines.  But God help us, literally, if we ever get to a point where we feel like we are praying too much.  This year we are trying to add the following to our local prayer events and if possible perhaps you and your congregation can do the same if it is not being done already:

-Quarterly or regularly scheduled cross denominational pray events

-Public prayer events and prayer walks

That being said, what are you praying for and who will you be praying with for the National Day of Prayer on Thursday May 7th of this year?

So a few months ago I pulled a tendon in my left arm.  It took forever to heal because I kept going right back out and doing the thing that caused the damage in the first place, #dagorhir (you’re going to have to Google it).  After weeks of it not healing I finally took a few weeks off from sparring and gym workouts to let it heal.  Then I gradually re-engaged in both #dagorhir  and gym workouts.  It took time but it healed.

So what do you think I did when I pulled a tendon in my right arm a few weeks later (this was after a pulled abdominal muscle and a few thumb smashes…#dagorhir)? I went right back at it without allowing time for healing.  Of course once I finally took a few weeks off it began to heal; I am still in that healing process.

I look at our nation now and I see a nation that needs to heal, from wounds of lost loved ones, from wounds of lost trust and confidence, and from wounds caused by hatred and bigotry. This nation, we make up this nation, need time to heal.

Over the Christmas weekend take some time to heal.  Step away from the keyboard.  Don’t respond to any flagrant posts or tweets. Ignore the rants and tirades and spend the weekend with family and loved ones.  We all need time to heal.  #merrychristmas.

Just because the elections are over doesn’t mean our prayers should stop.  No matter who is in office, whether we voted for them or not, that elected official, from the local magistrate to the congressman or senator, will need the prayers of the people in order to govern justly.  Please pray that the Church, the body of Christ, will deepen its commitment to prayer and never cease to call upon God to guide this nation and its leaders. #amen!

Don’t Let Fear Steal Your Vote

Sadly, many people are going to go to the polls this week and vote based on fear: fear of decreasing income and/or fear of increased taxes; fear based on the race or gender of the individual voting and/or the race or gender of the candidate running; fear of a party losing political power or of a party gaining it.  Don’t let fear steal your vote!

I pray that we as Christ followers would go to the polls ready to vote based on faith, not fear: faith in the one who saved us, who provides for us, and who is able to, and has done, exceedingly and abundantly more than we could ask or imagine.  Praying that we as Christ followers would seek His face first and then vote according to the prompting of His Holy Spirit. #amen! #whomshallwefear

Today as you are making final decisions to cast your vote in the upcoming elections please pray that we, as Christ followers, remember that when the United States declared its independence from Great Britain it was a unanimous decision based on knowing God as “Creator” and “Supreme Judge of the world” to whom we were accountable, and with the expectation of His “divine providence” in our success as an independent nation as was declared in the Declaration of Independence.  Pray that today and going forward we, as Christ followers, are united again in seeking the will of our Creator for His divine providence for our nation. #amen!

The Morning After…

I’m a registered Independent and I do not support or endorse any political party or candidate (I have to state this  so no one gets confused).

This morning whilst there are many people happy and excited that their voice has been heard there are just as many who feel like theirs has not; whilst there are many who feel as if they are no longer being oppressed there are just as many who feel they will be; whilst there are many who are ecstatic to have a powerful advocate for them there are just as many who feel they have none.

Sadly, this is not a failure of government but of the Church.  If there are any who feel their voice is not heard or is only now heard based on which candidate or p0litical party leads this government then the Church has failed to reveal God to the people.

If there are people who feel oppressed by government or by any organization it is because the Church has failed to reveal God to the people.  If people feel that the only advocate they have is whoever sits in the White House it is because the Church has failed to reveal God to the people.

Obviously, there is a huge failure on the part of the Church if some God fearing people are extremely excited and some God fearing people are extremely unhappy this morning based on the outcome of the election.  There would seem to be a difference of opinion about who God is and what He stands for…which is due to a failure of the Church to reveal God to the people.

Charles Finney, an advocate and leader in the Second Great Awakening, put it this way:

“If immorality prevails in the land, the fault is ours in a great degree. If there is a decay of conscience, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the public press lacks moral discrimination, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the church is degenerate and worldly, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the world loses its interest in religion, the pulpit is responsible for it. If Satan rules in our halls of legislation, the pulpit is responsible for it. If our politics become so corrupt that the very foundations of our government are ready to fall away, the pulpit is responsible for it. Let us not ignore this fact, my dear brethren; but let us lay it to heart, and be thoroughly awake to our responsibility in respect to the morals of this nation.” —Charles G. Finney, December 4, 1873

This mis-perception of God can be rectified…but only if the Church will put aside its own agendas and begin to reveal God to the people.

A Sure Thing?!?!?!?!?!

I’m a registered Independent and I do not support or endorse any political party or candidate (I have to state this  so no one gets confused).

Although many people have committed to vote for a specific candidate or political party there are still many people debating and trying to determine which candidate is the best option for 2012.  Unfortunately, we have no immediate way of telling because there are three things that are out of our control.  No matter which candidate we vote for we will never be able to tell if the candidate was…

1.  Not committed to doing anything they said they would; in other words they told us what they wanted us to hear in order to get into office.  Sorry if some of you are hearing this for the 1st time but politicians do lie; either intentionally or unintentionally, they tell false truths.

2.  Was stopped from doing everything they said they would.  Just because you voted for a candidate and they won doesn’t mean everyone else supports that candidate.  A lot of opposition can come comes against candidates, their party, and what they are trying to achieve…even ones that win the popular vote.

3.  Unprepared to do everything they said they would.  Very few candidates, even good intentioned ones, are able to fulfill all of their campaign promises.  Some promises are unfulfilled due to opposition from other parties, but some are unfulfilled because the candidate did not have all of the information before making the promise.  Believe it or not, a lot of promises are made due to the unpopularity of another candidate, an existing unpopular law or bill, or other reasons that may not supply the candidate with all of the necessary facts.

From a Biblical perspective, God knows the answer to all of these questions.  Throughout history He has worked in the hearts of national leaders to fulfill His purpose for the benefit of His people; even governments and leaders that were opposed to Him, rejected Him, and didn’t even believe in Him.  So I advise every Christ follower, to not just jump on a person, political party, or platform bandwagon.  Instead, fall on your knees in prayer and fasting and ask God for His guidance.   #pray.then.vote
