Upon Further Examination

I am literally dentisted-out.  Over the past few months I’ve had multiple dental exams, measurements, procedures, not to mention a dental surgery early last year.  It is my own fault for not seeing a dentist for the last 5 or 6 years.  At my last few visits I was told two different things by two dentists.  One said your teeth are fine but your gums need more checkups and more flossing. This was pretty consistent with what they had been telling me all along.  Another dentist recommended surgery and a possible bone graft.  How could they both look at the same thing and recommend two different strategies?

People ask the same thing about the revelation of God to humanity.  If God exists why are there so many different religions?  Even within Christianity why are there so many different denominations?  The religion question I can address in a different (and much longer) post.  As to the denominations it is the same thing that happened with the dentist.  We all see the same thing but interpret what we see through our own experiences.  We respond to what we see based on how we interpret it.  Neither dentist was wrong but each suggested a different approach.  And whilst I cannot speak for every denomination many read the same Word of God and experience His revelation of Himself to humanity and respond to that revelation and choose different ways to reverence and worship Him based on their understanding and life experiences.  The most important thing is that they do recognize His revelation and they do respond.

So a few months ago I pulled a tendon in my left arm.  It took forever to heal because I kept going right back out and doing the thing that caused the damage in the first place, #dagorhir (you’re going to have to Google it).  After weeks of it not healing I finally took a few weeks off from sparring and gym workouts to let it heal.  Then I gradually re-engaged in both #dagorhir  and gym workouts.  It took time but it healed.

So what do you think I did when I pulled a tendon in my right arm a few weeks later (this was after a pulled abdominal muscle and a few thumb smashes…#dagorhir)? I went right back at it without allowing time for healing.  Of course once I finally took a few weeks off it began to heal; I am still in that healing process.

I look at our nation now and I see a nation that needs to heal, from wounds of lost loved ones, from wounds of lost trust and confidence, and from wounds caused by hatred and bigotry. This nation, we make up this nation, need time to heal.

Over the Christmas weekend take some time to heal.  Step away from the keyboard.  Don’t respond to any flagrant posts or tweets. Ignore the rants and tirades and spend the weekend with family and loved ones.  We all need time to heal.  #merrychristmas.

The End????

My mother in law sent me a gift box to cheer my up a few weeks ago (in true Big-Phat fashion I did an unboxing video of my wife and I opening the gift box and revealing the contents which included, among other goodies, the superman cup I now use quite regularly).  She sent it because 2013 is not turning out to be as awesome as I thought it would. Earlier this year one of my cousins passed away. His mother was unable to make it to the funeral because she was diagnosed with a severe type of cancer days before. She just passed away a few weeks ago. At the end of March my brother passed away at the age of 48; still relatively young.

IMAG1355I’m not used to being on this side of the funeral arrangements. Normally I am sitting with grieving families praying for them and with them and trying to comfort them. But this was new for me. And it is still kind of difficult to deal with.

However, this did make me realize why we as Christ followers are sometimes so persistent in sharing our faith. It is because we believe that death is not the end, but the beginning. Many Christ followers believe that death is the beginning of a transition where we transition from this life into eternity.  I am NOT using this space to defend that belief or to try to explain it.  However, I would be happy to do so and provide practical and factual information for this belief if anyone wants to contact me to find our more.  However, I am stating that this is clearly what many Christ followers believe. And it is this belief that drives us to want to share the good news of Jesus Christ with those around us. We are not judgmental, we are not anal, we are not delusional or ignorant.  We are just convinced that there’s more to this life than just this life. Because of that we want to do everything we can to share that information with those in our lives.  So don’t hate me, don’t judge me, maybe even listen to me and hear my love for you coming through.

What If Pets and Animals Got Saved?

So I was thinking the other day…what if pets and other animals actually got saved?  I know people ponder this type of question but what if animals really got saved, is it even possible?  I know it should make PETA and all the ASPCA folks extremely giddy…but other than that…what if?

Dogs – There is a movie called “All Dogs Go To Heaven” so this kinda just makes sense.

Horses – Would the gambling industry even allow it?  We really don’t need more reasons for people to hate the church.

Pigs – They already fly so…

Birds – Would actually have a shorter trip to heaven (it’s true, I read it on the internet)

Cows – Wouldn’t have to keep doing those ads for Chik-Fil-A.

Chickens – Could stop hating on the cows that do those ads for Chik-Fil-A.

Cats – Would never happen since they’re all minions of the Anti-Christ.

Taking Big Problems to a Big God

I don’t know about you but I have felt overwhelmed recently as I pray for tragedy after tragedy.  When the tragedy is of human design, shootings, crime, political or corporate fallacy, I often find it easier to engage in asking God to help those who have been impacted.  I can pray for families and those involved as I picture their faces and circumstances and hurts.

But sometimes it is a tad bit overwhelming as we pray for those impacted by natural disasters.  Those impacted immediately can number in the hundreds, or thousands, or tens of thousands.  Those impacted later and for long term can be either double triple or even ten times the number originally impacted.  In those instances do you we pray for days, weeks, or years?

There are many still reeling from the impact of hurricane Katrina and the earthquakes in Chile and Haiti even though some time has passed since those events.  People are still homeless, infrastructure is still trying to be established…there is still so much to do.  It seems like I was just settling into praying for New Zealand when Japan was hit by the earthquakes and following tsunami.

It helps me to remember that our prayers are heard by a loving, merciful God Who is able to do exceedingly abundantly more than we could ask or even imagine; and that while I am grieving over these instances God grieves the loss of every man, woman, and child that has ever walked the face of the planet; that He feels their pain and their loss; and that He loves each and every one with a never ending love.

I would ask that you try not to be overwhelmed by the need for prayer, but just be a person who prays…and know that if we, who are called the children of God, ask anything in His name…He hears us.

The Twilight Saga Continues…

Just like many of you, I went online and purchased tickets to Eclipse, the next movie in the Twilight saga.  It’s not hard to believe that the 13 midnight showings were sold out at our local theatre, including the IMAX showing.  The movie does not only appeal to teens and tweens.  In fact, many of us vampire and werewolf loving action and adventure type pastors are enjoying it is well.  It seems the action oriented part of the story has gotten progressively better with each new movie.

Since I could not help but notice the texts, Facebook status updates, and tweets all anticipating this third movie I was wondering what God would say to some of the characters in the Twilight series.  Yes, I know they are only characters…but still, the thought crossed my mind that maybe He would say something like…:

Edward Cullen – You are going to be dead forever.  With me you could have life for eternity.

Jacob Black – Yes, I have counted and know even the number of hairs on your head, and torso, and paws.

Bella Swan – You seek a life filled with love, I offer you unconditional love for the rest of your life.

Victoria – You’ve taken this woman scorned thing to an entirely new level.

The Cullen Family – Blood may be thicker than water, but I offer you blood to drink which is the new covenant; I know what it means to stick up for family.
